History of Ella Divisional Secretariat

The Ella Divisional Secretariat was first located in an abandoned bar. It was first opened on 28th September 1979.The initial staff consisted of the Chief Clerk and 4 clerks. At this time there was no Divisional Secretariat assigned, and it was supervised by Mr. W Premadasa, the Deputy Government Agent of Bandarawela.
There were eight Grama Niladhari Divisions at the time – namely Halpe, Naulla, Kumbalwela, Gavaravela, Ballaketuwa, Navevalagama, Karadagolla and Ilukpelessa.
In 1981, the office was re-located at the village council building. By this time the number of Grama Niladhari Divisions have increased to thirteen and the staff increased to five and three minor employees.
In 1989, the office was burnt down by an unknown mob due to the unrest that persisted at the time and was moved to the official residence of the then Divisional Secretariat, Mr. T B Disanayaka. An Assistant Divisional Secretariat and an Administrative officer had also been appointed at this time.
In 1992, the Divisional Secretariat office which was yet at this official residence, was re-loacted at the new building opened on 7th March 1992.
The Divisional Secretariat office is continues to serve the public since then with continuous improvements.
